Hey Gang, Recently went through my yearbooks for the first time in ~30 years. I must have smiled a thousand times. What a fantastic three years with so many great folks. I really regret losing track of most of you. After we graduated I went to the U of I (go Vandals!) and switched majors a few times before settling on pre-med like Tim Crum. After 5 years in Moscow I headed to the UW for med school (go Huskies!) along with John Manschreck (LHS 78). Seattle was great and I was there from 83 to 94 finishing med school, then general surgery residency, two years in a research lab, and finally a vascular surgery residency. After graduating from the UW (three times) I took my first real job here at Wake Forest University in North Carolina and I’m still teaching and operating here in the department of vascular surgery. Professor- hard to believe, right, after all of my (our) antics? I was anything but a model student at LHS. I met my awesome wife Heidi at the U of I in 1982. She’s a nurse and from Sandpoint, ID where we have a place on lake Pend Oreille. She and the kids spend a lot of time there in the summer and occasionally spring skiing. I make it out for the end of summer and often during hunting season. I always enjoy ribbing my Sandpoint Bulldog buddies about getting thumped by our Bengals. I was visiting my parents in Lewiston in March and went into a shoe store and was pleasantly surprised that the owner seemed to recognize me, but then I realized she just read my name on my credit card. As you can see from my photo I haven’t aged as well as my drum set (yep, the same one). I’m a bit grayer, heavier and softer than when you last saw me. Not happy at all that the rest of you look just about the same as I remember. I have so many great memories of LHS, including: Learning how to weld and tool leather in Shop class from coach Murphy; the wrestling team; the pep band (playing Chicago tunes and traveling with the cheerleaders!); jazz lab band (2cnd place, Reno International Jazz Festival!), marching band (traveling to San Francisco, New York and DC); rocking senior year with Mike Adkins (bass), the Shumaker brothers (keyboard and sax), Gary Hart (vocals) and Richard Clark (wicked guitar); I miss my 63 VW bug (can’t remember who I sold that to? Hagy?) and my 76 Landcruiser; shooting trap at the old airport gun club with Linda Clayton; hanging out with Adkins, Penrod and the rest of the gang; flirting with Jenny, Ann, Cindy, Louisa, Shelly, the Moe sisters, the entire drill team, etc., etc., etc. (Ann and I did win that award); pheasant hunting with Pat Donohue (sorry Pat about that stray buckshot); Pat Hunter riding his motorcycle through the halls of our alma mater; the Wild Bunch and L Club guys; and well basically everyone. Have a great reunion! I regret I can’t be there but please tip a couple for me! Warm regards. Randy |
